The Rural Development Institute
The Rural Development Institute (RDI), at Selkirk College's Applied Research and Innovation Centre, undertakes social innovation research and capacity building projects that center on challenges affecting rural communities, environments, and economies. The RDI was initially funded by Columbia Basin Trust through an 8-year partnership agreement which began in 2011 and ended in 2019. The RDI is now sustained through a combination of fee-for-service and grant-funded applied research projects.
What is applied research? Simply put, applied research involves the development and application of innovative solutions to address practical problems and real-world needs. In the case of the RDI, applied research often involves gathering data on important topics related to rural well-being, exploring and piloting best practice approaches, and mobilizing new knowledge so that it can be readily used by decision-makers.
Selkirk College and the Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute acknowledge the First Nations of the West Kootenay and Boundary regions on whose traditional territories we are honoured to operate: the Sinixt (Lakes), the Syilx (Okanagan), the Ktunaxa, and the Secwépemc (Shuswap).
